Minecraft's Mounts of Mayhem Drop Introduces a Stunningly Wild New Spear to Your World
The seasonal game drop for the block-building phenomenon has arrived — and it features the first new weapon introduced into the title since the mace made its debut. The javelin is finally here and it might just alter your gameplay in Minecraft, particularly when you thrive on pandemonium.
A Weapon Forged for Mounted Mayhem
The Mounts of Mayhem update also incorporates several new features and updates centered around animal mounts in the game. That focus made the spear the natural choice for this release, as the development team had long felt it was the moment to introduce a new weapon.
"From the outset, we understood that we desired a new weapon that would provide extended reach, and we designed it specifically for fighting from atop a creature," explained a lead developer. "We prototyped a number of concepts, but the spear was the one that both handled superbly when we ran our trials and also looked good for the intended purpose."
If you're wondering whether fighting from a saddle means you can joust against your companions on steeds, the response is a resounding yes. In fact, there's even an offensive action perfectly suited for it.
"Mounted lance combat] is a major functions for the spear, and it's a blast," the lead says. "The spear has a dual attack system: You have the quick stab, where you just stab your enemy. But you also have a sprinting strike where you couch your lance and inflict increased harm [with] the more pace you have. So [it’s] perfect for jousting on horses."
Aerial Mayhem & Deep-Sea Exploration
The chaotic fun isn't limited to there, though. If you're deep enough into the game that you've been to The End, the developers have an truly outlandish idea. "If you are quite advanced, [spears are] perfect for strapping on the elytra and flying forth and unleashing absolute pandemonium," she teases.
In other words: Sky jousting is now possible, and it should be made an Olympic sport without delay.
Another significant inclusion in this fresh content is the Nautilus. This aquatic being, which is inspired by the nautilus shells we've all been collecting for years, can be tamed and ridden for deep-sea journeys. Not only will it transport you through the water more swiftly than swimming, it'll also conserve your breath meter, so there's no need to surface for oxygen.
The other inclusions are primarily things that seek your demise, as is the nature of Minecraft. Naturally, there's also a undead nautilus popping up in the water, sometimes with a zombie villager on its back. If you manage to defeat the Drowned, though, you can claim the undead mount — or the regular one, for that matter — with a puffer fish.
"We've pondered this issue for some time, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it appeared to be the right time to also introduce something for aquatic environments," the lead explains. "For the Nautilus specifically, we had a several proposals for sea mounts that we wanted to test, but the Nautilus concept art looked compelling, and we have the connection to the Nautilus shell that was pre-existing in the game."
She also adds that there are actually two different types of undead nautilus: regular and coral zombie Nautilus. "[The variants] add variety to what you discover underwater."
Desert Dangers and Long-Awaited Tweaks
Other additions include the Parched, biome-specific skeletons that can survive in the sun, which means there's no refuge from them if you venture in that environment. Sometimes you'll see them on camel husks, another new mob. These passive, zombified camels have an excellent design that sees their skeletal frame exposed. The same goes for undead steeds, who have a analogous exposed-rib aesthetic and can sometimes be spawned in the darkness with a spear-carrying undead rider on their back.
The last two things on the drop's list are minor quality-of-life improvements, including some long-overdue changes to equestrian travel. Now, you can traverse rivers and lakes while mounted on a horse. Furthermore, netherite horse armor is now obtainable at the crafting table, so you can give your horse the top-tier safeguarding it is worthy of.
A Spicy Send-Off for the Year
In summary, the year-end release of the year is a notable addition. The spear on its own — and the mayhem it enables — would have seemed like a considerable upgrade. Add in the Nautilus, and more things trying to kill you, and Minecraft's definitely getting a bit spicier.
The Mayhem Mounts update is out now for all major editions of Minecraft.
